Una delle massime espressioni dell'architettura romanica in Sardegna si trova nell'Anglona, nella parte nord-occidentale dell'Isola, caratterizzata da decorazioni bicromatiche . Si tratta di una gemma architettonica romanico-pisana, rivisitata in forme gotiche e barocche. La basilica di Nostra Signora domina isolata un vasto altopiano del territorio di Tergu, piccolo comune dell'Anglona. Emerge dal verde della natura con la sua policromia, data da cantoni di pietra trachitica rosso-violacea e da decorazioni in pietra calcarea bianca. Sancta Maria de Therco fu costruita probabilmente tra 1065 e 1082, forse per volontà del giudice di Torres Mariano I, lo stesso che fece costruire la basilica della Santissima Trinità di Saccargia, con la quale sono evidenti le analogie. La chiesa fu ampliata nel secolo successivo quando divenne abbazia benedettina e, insieme al monastero, del quale noterai vicino i ruderi, sede del priorato cassinese. Da secoli è meta della lunga (undici chilometri) e suggestiva processione del Lunissanti, che parte all'alba e ritorna, di notte con la luce delle fiaccole, a Castelsardo e apre l'appassionata Settimana santa castellanese.
