A pochi chilometri da Torino , all'mbocco delle tre valli (Val d'Ala , Val Grande e Valle di Viù) che portano il suo nome , sorge Lanzo . Incerta l'origine del nome : chi lo fa risalire al latino "lanceum" per la forma del primitivo borgo , chi al tedesco "lanzman" di vario significato. Il nome di Lanzo si trova indicato per la prima volta in un atto del 1029 con il quale il vescovo di Asti fa dono al Monastero di S. Giusto di Susa del borgo . Dal 1011 al 1037 il vescovo di Torino Landolfo fa costruire il castello e nel 1159 il Barbarossa conferma , tra altri possedimenti piemontesi , la "corte di Lanzo" al vescovo di Torino Carlo I. Lanzo divenne in seguito feudo di varie casate e nel 1219 ottiene il privilegio di poter tenere il mercato settimanale al martedì , versando un terzo dei guadagni al faudatario in carica. Nel 1246 l'imperatore Federico I concesse a Tommaso II di Savoia , tra altri possedimenti , anche Lanzo . Nel 1305 , sotto la Marchesa Margherita dei Marchesi del Monferrato Lanzo divenne una "Castellania" per poi tornare nuovamente ai Savoia con Amedeo VI. Nel 1377 , sotto la guida del Conte Verde , fu costruito il famoso "Ponte del Diavolo" che permettevas di raggiungere Torino senza passare dalle terre del Canvese , allora non sotto il controllo dei Savoia. In seguito alle guerre Franco- Spagnole , combattute in Italia nella prima parte del '500 , il castello di Lanzo venne espugnato e distrutto dal Duca di Brissac , ad eccezione della Torre Civica ritratta in foto , costruita da Aymone di Challant nel 1357 e porta del borgo , tutt'ora in ottimo stato di conservazione.
