Il mese scorso ho ricominciato le mie esplorazioni notturne, dopo un iniziale periodo caldo e soleggiato, maggio è arrivato accompagnato da forti e continui temporali. Gli animali restano nascosti nelle tane ed è inutile tentare le esplorazioni sotto la pioggia, ora sono in attesa del bel tempo per ricominciare ma nei pochi giorni soleggiati sono riuscito ad osservare molte specie. Quella notte ero nel sottobosco, dovevo camminare lentamente e stare attento a non calpestare i tanti piccoli animali nascosti tra le piante erbacee e l'erba alta. Da lontano ho visto, su un ramo di finocchietto selvatico, queste locuste egiziane in accoppiamento. Mi sono avvicinato piano piano perché questa specie è molto furba: ad ogni mio passo la femmina lentamente si spostava nascondendosi tra i rametti di finocchietto e naturalmente portava con se anche il maschio aggrappato a lei. Ero in una posizione molto scomoda e sono riuscito a scattare solo questa foto, poi mi sono allontanato per non disturbarli. Come potete vedere la femmina è più grande del maschio, in primavera depone fino a 100 uova scavando dei cunicoli a qualche centimetro di profondità nel terreno. I piccoli, che si chiamano neanidi, appena nati escono subito allo scoperto e iniziano a nutrirsi della vegetazione. Le neanidi appena uscite dall'uovo hanno già l'aspetto dell'adulto ma si distinguono per le dimensioni ridotte, per la mancanza delle ali e degli organi riproduttivi. In circa due mesi effettuano almeno 5 mute, durante le quali sviluppano queste caratteristiche. Un'altra caratteristica particolare è il cambiamento del colore, le neanidi alla schiusa sono tutte verdi ma durante le mute possono cambiare colore con sfumature di giallo o marrone chiaro, per mimetizzarsi meglio nell'ambiente in cui si trovano. Gli esemplari adulti invece sono di colore marrone chiaro, ma qualche volta ho visto anche esemplari con tonalità di verde.
