Cantare il Maggio a Civitella Marittima è un rito che si rinnova da centinaia di anni, almeno dal XVIII secolo. Il "Maggio" è infatti di tipo itinerante,"di questua", ed i componenti della squadra portano ognuno un ramo d'alloro privi sia del "corbellaio" che dell' "alberaio" due figure solitamente incaricate di trasportare il corbello con le offerte (qui sostituito da un semplice paniere) ed un albero stilizzato, costruito artificialmente per portare l'augurio di un raccolto fecondo. Inoltre, i cantori non sono vestiti con colori sgargianti, trini o cappelli variopinti. A differenza di molti altri gruppi di "maggerini" tipici della Maremma Grossetana, a Civitella i canti avvengono senza l'utilizzo di strumenti musicali: sono alcune figure del gruppo che, modulando la voce, si occupano di creare un sottofondo canoro. Recenti studi svolti dal sig. Franceschini, studioso e cantore di Civitella, evidenziano la similitudine di questo maggio con le antiche invocazioni religiose, dato che nella sua forma più autentica, tali canti sono pressoché privi dell'allegrezza delle canzoni sociali o politiche, quest'ultime assenti completamente.
