Fu eretta nel 398 d.C. per opera del senatore Bizante e di suo figlio Pammachio. Essa sorge nell'omonima piazza sul pendio occidentale del Celio ed è dedicata ai due ufficiali dell'esercito romano Giovanni e Paolo, ferventi seguaci della 'nova religio' che andava diffondendosi sempre più nell'impero e per questo vittime della persecuzione dell'imperatore Giuliano l'Apostata che, nel 362 d.C., li fece uccidere e seppellire nella loro stessa casa. I resti dei due Santi sono custoditi all'interno della Basilica in un'antica vasca in porfido; il luogo della sepoltura è indicato da una lastra tombale a metà della navata maggiore. Gli scavi sotto la chiesa hanno evidenziato due case romane risalenti all'inizio del II secolo: la prima era costituita su due livelli, con un edificio termale al piano inferiore ed un cortile-ninfeo nel quale si conserva tuttora un elegante affresco del III secolo raffigurante “Proserpina” con alcune divinità marine. L'altra casa, adiacente al Clivus Scauri, già alla fine del II secolo assunse l'aspetto di un'insula, ossia un'abitazione con portico e botteghe al pianterreno ed appartamenti ai piani superiori, almeno due, come si può dedurre dalle due file di finestre che si affacciano sul Clivus Scauri. La Basilica è stata soprannominata 'Chiesa dei lampadari' per il gran numero di essi al suo interno che mi propongo di visitare e di fotografare in una prossima occasione allorché la troverò aperta.
