La Basilica Cattedrale é stata ricostruita secondo le linee architettoniche e decorative sei-settecentesche attribuite all'architetto e scultore C.Fanzago che lavorò sicuramente a Montecassino negli anni 1627-28 per la sistemazione del presbiterio e nel 1645 fornì il disegno per l'altare maggiore. Molto del materiale marmoreo preesistente al bombardamento de '44 é stato riutilizzato nel rifacimento dei pavimenti e nella intarsiatura delle pareti. Si é perduta per sempre tutta la decorazione pittorica sia ad affresco che su tela, presente sulle volte e nelle pareti della Basilica.
