I vecchi bracconieri non passavano mai dal bosco delle Miande, perché dicevano che lassù anche le piante avevano occhi e orecchie. Eppure una volta capitò che Barba Andrè e il giovane Tony Scaus dovettero proprio passarci attraverso con una femmina di camoscio sulle spalle. “L'abbiamo fatta grossa questa volta…” piagnucolava Tony dopo essersi fermato e aver gettato la preda ai piedi di un grosso abete bianco: “…ci avrà visto qualcuno Andrè?” L'uomo di vecchia esperienza scuotendo la testa tirò fuori dal taschino carta e tabacco per rollare una cicca: “Non ci ha visti nessuno Tony; e non ci segue nessuno…” Tony agitatissimo non si fidava: continuava a saltellare come un capretto a destra e a manca per verificare che proprio nessuno li stesse seguendo: “Se mio padre viene a sapere che ho tirato a una femmina che allattava, mi accoppa!” Barba Andrè, per nulla impietosito dal panico e dalla smisurata apprensione con i quali stesse vivendo quegli istanti il giovane e maldestro compagno di disavventure, certo che lezioni del genere avessero il loro giusto peso nel temprare il carattere di un uomo, tanto per rincarare la dose, sollevato lo sguardo verso i primi rami dell'abete che li sormontava indicò, con un cenno del capo, qualcosa sulla pianta che immediatamente Tony andò a cercare, poi allargate le braccia sentenziò: “Ecco: se prima eravamo solo noi due a sapere della faccenda, adesso puoi starne certo che lo saprà tutto il paese! ” Tony impietrito dallo sguardo severo e inquisitorio che fuoriusciva dalla grigia e screpolata corteccia dell'abete sbiancò in volto. Poi si voltò lentamente verso Andrè e con sguardo trasognato volle sapere: “Ma… allora è vero che il bosco delle Miande ha….” Andrè non lo lasciò terminare e con fare risoluto caricò il camoscio a spalle apostrofandolo : “Sarà meglio che sia tu a raccontare a tuo padre come sono andate le cose.”
