L'arrivo in arena dei galli è preceduto da uno sbatter d'ali che rompe la silenziosa e morbida atmosfera che tra notte e giorno ammanta il bosco e le sue radure. Sagome indistinte si muovono sulla neve dura e compatta accompagnate da sommessi rugolii. Improvvisi e possenti si accendono schiocchi e soffi selvaggi, seguiti da fughe e rincorse precipitose apparentemente incapaci di violare un invisibile perimetro a noi incomprensibile. Mentre il bosco si rianima delle sue voci mi ritrovo, solo, a rimirare un angolo di natura indistinta che senza preavviso i galli, con un frullo inatteso, abbandonano sospinti da chissà quale insondabile impulso. Adesso il loro canto proviene dalle cime dei larici che circondano la radura. Guidano le femmine. Con parsimonia queste emettono secche risposte e, incorporee, tracciano il sottobosco dirette al rendez-vous. Il silenzio improvviso, una tregua sospetta, riattiva i sensi incantati dall'ancestrale rituale. Qualcosa sta per accadere. Dal bosco riemerge ancora il vigoroso volo di un gallo. Raggiunge diretto il centro della radura ed è seguito a catena da tutti i concorrenti. Avvolta da nuova luce l'arena è ancora viva: il rituale si fa serio. Dopo le parate a tratti lente e veloci, l'indecisione dei maschi a combattere che si manifesta con ripetuti balzi avanti e in dietro accompagnati da soffi e curiosi gorgheggi, arrivano gli scontri. Sono violenti, rapidissimi e fanno male: beccate, artigliate e colpi d'ala. Penne e sprazzi di neve si sollevano attorno ai contendenti. È tutto lì: davanti ai miei occhi che non riesco a scollare dalla scena. Una delle tante manifestazioni dell'energia della primavera: la primavera in montagna. Attendo le femmine che dai trespoli aerei ai margini della radura non ne vogliono sapere di avvicinarsi. Quando i primi raggi di sole bucano la corona di piante, uno ad uno i galli si zittiscono: richiudono i ventagli delle code e con un balzo tornano nelle profondità del bosco.
