La Tropinota squalida è un insetto della famiglia Scarabaeidae. L'adulto ha abitudini diurne ed è attivo in primavera durante il periodo delle fioriture, con l'arrivo dell'estate diventa molto raro a causa delle alte temperature. È di piccole dimensioni, ha un corpo tozzo di colore nero o marrone scuro con delle macchie gialle sul dorso, è ricoperto da una peluria più o meno folta di colore giallo. Può muoversi piuttosto velocemente grazie alle 3 paia di zampe, ognuna delle quali termina con un uncino che gli consente di aggrapparsi bene ai rami delle piante. La testa è molto piccola, possiede gli occhi composti tipici degli insetti, due piccole antenne e due forti mandibole. Si nutrono del polline e dei fiori di tante specie di piante, a volte mangiano anche i fiori chiusi non ancora germogliati. L'accoppiamento avviene sui fiori, in seguito la femmina scava dei cunicoli sotterranei e depone circa 20 uova grandi poco più di 1mm. Le piccole larve nascono dopo circa 15 giorni e trascorrono tutta la loro vita nel terreno nutrendosi di humus e legno in decomposizione. Sono di colore giallo chiaro con la testa marrone e possiedono delle piccole zampe che gli consentono di scavare nel terreno. Durante la crescita compiono due mute e diventano adulte in circa due mesi, quando arriva il periodo della metamorfosi la larva costruisce la pupa, formata da sostanze vegetali. Dopo 2 o 3 settimane l'adulto rompe la pupa ed esce allo scoperto pronto ad avventurarsi sulle fioriture primaverili, la durata della loro vita è di circa 1 anno. In Italia è presente anche un'altra specie molto simile, la Tropinota hirta, che ha le stesse caratteristiche e la stessa colorazione. Per distinguerle si deve osservare la quinta Interstria delle elitre: nella Tropinota squalida è biforcuta, mentre nella Tropinota hirta è longitudinale. Nella foto potete osservare bene questa particolarità. Quel pomeriggio di metà marzo stavo fotografando le prime fioriture primaverili, pero, pesco, pruno, ciliegio, melograno. Ce n'erano molti su tutte le piante, sono stato 3 ore ad osservarli mentre mangiavano il polline e camminavano da un fiore all'altro. C'erano anche alcuni esemplari in accoppiamento, ma erano sui rami alti degli alberi e non sono riuscito ad avvicinarmi. Questo esemplare aveva infilato la testa all'interno di un fiore di pruno, osservando bene potete notare un buco anche sull'altro fiore vicino, segno del passaggio di quest'insetto. Il sole stava tramontando dietro di me e come al solito c'era il vento che muoveva tutto anche i rami degli alberi, ho fotografato in fretta con il 200mm e tubi di prolunga, mentre con la mano sinistra mantenevo un ombrellino bianco per ottenere una luce più delicata.
