Le quindici sottospecie in cui viene suddiviso mostrano una vasta gamma di colorazioni e disegni. Sulla regione dorsale la colorazione varia da toni quasi neri, attraverso il marrone-rossastro e il grigio-giallastro, al bianco. Su quella inferiore, la gamma dei colori varia dal bianco al camoscio-cannella.
