La primavera è arrivata, ma già da gennaio tutta la natura lentamente ha incominciato a fiorire; purtroppo i fiori di alcune piante del genere Narcissus sono già spariti, consumati dal vento e dalla pioggia. Anche gli animali si sono risvegliati; api, vespe, bombi e altri insetti si posano sui fiori per nutrirsi di nettare. Ho visto anche i primi lepidotteri, varie specie di falene, tante Pieris rapae e brassicae, due macaoni e infine anche questa bellissima specie. La Pararge aegeria è una farfalla appartenente alla famiglia delle Nymphalidae. Preferisce ambienti ombrosi e umidi, è una specie piuttosto elusiva, vola molto velocemente e si nasconde tra la vegetazione. Compie di solito due generazioni all'anno, gli sfarfallamenti della prima generazione avvengono tra marzo e giugno, quelli della seconda generazione tra agosto e settembre. Questa specie è in grado di trascorrere l'inverno sia come crisalide che come bruco, quindi le generazioni annuali possono essere anche 3. Le uova vengono deposte una alla volta su piante della famiglia Poaceae, come Il genere Triticum e Agropyron. Si schiudono in circa 10 giorni, i bruchi vivono sempre sulle piante nutrici, sono di colore verde con una piccola coda biforcuta. Strategia territoriale: si posa in un punto soleggiato del sottobosco e aspetta che una femmina entri nel suo territorio, quando questo avviene, lui le vola dietro, si posano tra la vegetazione e iniziano l'accoppiamento. L'attività territoriale inizia all'alba, i maschi seguono il sole mentre si sposta sul terreno fino a sera, quando poi volano tra gli alberi a riposare. Se però si avvicina un altro un maschio, lui vola verso l'intruso e inizia un combattimento; il maschio sconfitto vola via e il vincitore si posa nel terreno soleggiato. Il combattimento è spesso breve, uno scontro prolungato può causare molti danni alle ali. Di solito i maschi che utilizzano la strategia territoriale sono i più forti e in buona salute. Strategia di pattugliamento: il maschio vola liberamente alla ricerca delle femmine, questa è la strategia più facile utilizzata spesso dagli esemplari deboli. Ieri stavo fotografando le fioriture delle piante nel mio terreno: melo, pero, pesco, pruno, ciliegio, melograno… Erano le 17, il sole non era ancora tramontato e la luce era molto delicata. All'improvviso ho visto intorno a me questa farfalla, dopo un veloce volo tra gli alberi si è subito nascosta nel sottobosco all'ombra tra i rovi; ho staccato la macchina fotografica dal treppiedi e mi sono avvicinato lentamente. La luce era poca ma la farfalla è stata collaborativa, sono riuscito a fotografarla e ad allontanarmi senza farla scappare. Da molto tempo non vedevo questa specie, nonostante le piante nutrici non mancano; sono molto contento che quest'anno è ritornata. In passato ho osservato il comportamento territoriale dei maschi ma non mi sono mai avvicinato per fotografare. Questo esemplare aveva le ali un po' danneggiate ma questa mattina ho visto altri esemplari appena sfarfallati.
