Tante altre volte Francesco deve aver sostato presso “Le Celle” collocate sulla strada che da Assisi sale verso la Toscana, eppure di nessun'altra abbiamo testimonianza se non di un'ultima e così importante. Siamo nel 1226. E' l'anno della morte di Francesco. Le stigmate già segnano il suo corpo da due anni, da quando il 17 settembre del 1224, sul monte della Verna, un Serafino gli donò di gustare l'amore immenso di Dio. Secondo i suoi biografi egli, in primavera, si trovava a Siena, forse per cure mediche. Le sue condizioni apparivano disperate, tanto che i compagni del Santo gli chiedono di scrivere il testamento e lui con poche e semplici parole lo dettò. Ma non era ancora giunta la sua ora. Le condizioni probabilmente migliorano. Francesco fece nuovamente sosta a “Le Celle”, un'ultima volta, per un ultimo assaggio di quella comunione con Dio, che quel luogo gli aveva tante volte riservato. Fu allora che, in seguito ad una permanenza forse prolungata, nel segreto della sua fenditura nella roccia, Francesco ripensa o forse addirittura inizia a scrivere il suo Testamento.
