Di fronte a Palazzo Vecchio si trova la Fontana del Nettuno. L'apparato scultoreo venne eseguito tra il 1560 e il 1565: l'Ammannati, che aveva avuto uno studio provvisorio sotto la loggia della Signoria, sfruttò anche i disegni di Baccio Bandinelli, nel frattempo morto nel 1560. Fu inaugurata in occasione delle nozze tra Francesco I de' Medici e la granduchessa Giovanna d'Austria il 10 dicembre 1565. La figura di Nettuno è realizzata in marmo bianco di Carrara e riprende i tratti somatici di Cosimo I de' Medici. Benché la statua non fosse particolarmente apprezzata, i lavori proseguirono nei dieci anni successivi, con l'aiuto dei migliori scultori della città per il bordo della vasca. La vasca è ottagonale e contiene i quattro cavalli del cocchio di Nettuno (due in marmo bianco e due in marmo rosato), le cui ruote sono ruote celesti coi segni zodiacali, simboleggianti il trascorrere del tempo. Ai piedi del Nettuno stanno tre tritoni intenti a suonare delle tibie che zampillano acqua. (Firenze e i suoi monumenti)
