Dalla primavera fino all'autunno trascorro quasi tutte le mie giornate in natura, cercando in ogni modo di preservare il suo ecosistema e osservare tutte le sue bellezze. Nel pomeriggio dopo pranzo inizio la mia esplorazione, osservo attentamente il terreno e le piante in cerca di bruchi da allevare. La luce è troppo forte per fotografare e ne approfitto per osservare il paesaggio e fare qualche lavoro agricolo. Quando fa troppo caldo mi apposto al fresco sotto un albero e per vedere al computer le tante foto. Alle 17 riprendo l'esplorazione in cerca di animali e se trovo qualche specie collaborativa la fotografo con la luce del tramonto. Raramente fotografo a mano libera di giorno, utilizzo i treppiedi con la poca luce naturale e il flash se necessario; cerco sempre per quanto possibile di preparare la foto in ogni dettaglio senza però mai spaventare il soggetto. Purtroppo in estate a causa delle alte temperature e della siccità incontro pochi animali, di solito solo i bruchi e le farfalle che volano velocemente da un fiore all'altro impossibili da fotografare. Dopo il tramonto mi fermo a mangiare e mi preparo per l'esplorazione notturna, è la notte il momento ideale per fotografare; l'umidità e le temperature più basse consentono agli animali di uscire dalle tane. Posso fotografare e osservare le rare scene di vita degli animali notturni. Quando arriva il buio mi incammino in cerca di animali oppure mi apposto vicino alle tane. Fotografo gli animali collaborativi sempre con i treppiedi ma spesso preferisco avventurarmi in posti più particolari e nascosti; che essendo molto stretti posso raggiungere solo con la macchina fotografica in mano. Alle prime luci, quando il sole inizia ad illuminare il terreno libero le farfalle appena nate dal mio allevamento e se me lo consentono le fotografo in attesa del loro primo volo; allevo da 200 a 400 lepidotteri all'anno e quasi ogni giorno si schiude qualche crisalide. Se quel giorno non sono nate farfalle esploro ancora un po' i dintorni e qualche animale lo incontro sempre. Quando il sole inizia a salire, di solito alle 10, mi incammino verso casa per riposarmi; dopo pranzo ricomincio. Dedicare tanto tempo all'osservazione della natura ogni giorno può diventare stancante, soprattutto dormendo poche ore; ma in cambio mi dà tranquillità e tanta nuova forza. Non posso farne a meno. Portare tutta l'attrezzatura con il caldo diventa stancante; ci sono le zanzare che mi girano sempre intorno, per fortuna da un paio di anni non mi pungono più ma le sento sempre ronzare. Quel giorno di inizio luglio avevo portato con me una crisalide di macaone, era diventata quasi trasparente e mancavano poche ore alla nascita. Purtroppo il bruco prima della metamorfosi non ha tessuto bene i filamenti di seta sul rametto e durante la sua ultima muta a causa delle forti contrazioni uno di questi si è rotto. Non potevo lasciare così la crisalide fino alla schiusa vicino al rametto, l'ho staccata tagliando con un coltello gli altri filamenti e l'ho posizionata su una foglia sul fondo del contenitore. Ho trascorso tutto il pomeriggio a controllare le piante nutrici, ho trovato qualche bruco e anche alcune uova di macaone, che ho raccolto e posizionato in un apposito contenitore. Quando è calato il buio mi sono preparato per l'esplorazione notturna, quella notte c'era un vento costante, a tratti anche piuttosto forte considerato il periodo. La scorsa estate durante il giorno ha fatto sempre più caldo, di notte invece c'è stata molta più umidità e vento a differenza degli anni passati. Il macaone è nato alle 2,30, ho aspettato prima che distendesse le ali nel contenitore al riparo dal vento e poi mi sono preparato per fotografarlo. Mi sono posizionato sempre nello stesso luogo dove libero tutti i lepidotteri del mio allevamento: ai margini del bosco vicino a tanti tipi di piante, l'ambiente perfetto per il macaone, può nutrirsi di nettare e deporre le uova sui tanti finocchietti selvatici. Come posatoio ho scelto un rametto fiorito di Lantana camara, delicatamente ho fatto salire il macaone sulla mia mano per posizionarlo sui fiori. Lui però ha preferito restare lì più di 10 minuti prima di salire sul posatoio. A causa del vento non riusciva a restare fermo sui fiori ma sono riuscito comunque a scattare diverse foto, tra cui questa ad ali aperte che mostra molto bene tutte le particolarità della testa. Le antenne che gli permettono di percepire tutti gli odori dei fiori e dell'ambiente, i due occhi che sono molto più grandi e sviluppati rispetto a quelli del bruco, la spirotromba arrotolata essenziale per nutrirsi di nettare. Dopo averlo fotografato l'ho rimesso nel fauna box per ripararlo dal vento. Al sorgere del sole il vento era sparito e appena l'ho liberato è volato via sui fiori e io come sempre sono rimasto stupito ad osservare.
