E' una illusione ottica! Il soffitto è piatto e al di sopra è stato applicato un dipinto prospettico su tela realizzato da Andrea Pozzo (1685); si tratta, quindi, un'illusione ottica tridimensionale. Questo ingegnoso espediente venne ideato dal Frate pittore per sopperire alla mancanza di fondi destinati alla costruzione della cupola. Ma si dice anche che siano stati gli stessi abitanti del quartiere Campo Marzio a non volerne la costruzione. Essa, infatti, avrebbe oscurato il sole. Il punto di fuga è posto verso la navata e la cupola è ricca non solo di particolari architettonici (lucernaio, finestre) ma anche di affreschi. Nei quattro pennacchi sono rappresentati Giuditta, David, Sansone e Giaele. Personaggi biblici vincitori sui nemici di Israele ma in questo caso impiegato come metafora della battaglia ingaggiata da Sant'Ignazio di Loyola e dai Gesuiti contro vizi ed errori.
