Tra i luoghi naturali esistenti sulla Terra, con i quali l'essere umano può confrontare la sua dimensione rimanendo senza fiato, il deserto è senza dubbio uno degli ambienti che maggiormente suscita un senso di esiguità. Chi ama il deserto subisce il suo fascino, sentendosi attratto, ipnotizzato, quasi non avvertendo l'ostilità nascosta nell'estensione infinita delle dune sabbiose. Penso a chi per primo ha osato attraversarlo, ammaliato da alba e tramonti, intimorito dal nulla e dal sole a picco. Piccoli uomini sono riusciti, immersi nello spazio sabbioso, a raggiungere le mete, oggi alla portata di tutti, affrontandolo con tenacia ma soprattutto umiltà.
