I Mercati di Traiano sono un complesso di edifici costruiti in laterizio ricavati dal taglio delle pendici del Quirinale. L'inaugurazione dei Mercati avvenne tra il 112 e il 113 d.C.. Il complesso era destinato ad attività amministrative collegate ai Fori Imperiali, ma soprattutto ad ampie attività commerciali, nelle numerose tabernae ai lati delle vie interne. Gli edifici erano separati tra loro da un percorso antico che in età tarda prese il nome di via Biberatica, che correva a mezza costa sul pendio del colle. La parte inferiore, nel livello più basso, comprende gli edifici del Grande emiciclo, articolato su tre piani e con due grandi aule alle estremità con una raffinata decorazione marmorea, e del Piccolo emiciclo, con ambienti su tre piani. In cima alla strada c'era il Corpo centrale, con tabernae al livello della via e altri tre piani di ambienti interni, alcuni particolarmente curati ed elaborati, probabilmente uffici, destinati al funzionario preposto al vicino Foro, il procurator Fori Divi Traiani testimoniato da un'iscrizione. Tra la fine del II e gli inizi del III sec. avvennero i restauri di Orazio Rogato, procuratore del Foro di Traiano. Al complesso degli edifici si aggiunse fra il XII ed il XIII secolo la Torre delle Milizie, in origine un'altissima e stretta torre a pianta quadrata, costruita in blocchetti di tufo nel XII-XIII secolo, e innestata all'angolo di un palazzo colonnato. Dopo la metà del XIII secolo, il palazzo fu demolito e la torre originaria venne inglobata per due terzi della sua altezza da una spessa struttura di cementizio rivestita all'interno di mattoni. Ne risultava una nuova torre a tre corpi rientrati, quello superiore costituito dall'estremità della torre primitiva. La parte superiore crollò in seguito a un terremoto, dando così alla Torre delle Milizie la forma che tuttora conserva. Nella stessa epoca venne costruito, sopra una sezione dei Mercati Traiani, un castello fortificato, che prese il nome di Militiae almeno a partire dal XII secolo, e la cui proprietà passò tra il XIII e il XV sec. alle grandi famiglie romane degli Annibaldi, dei Caetani e dei Conti, finchè non venne inglobato nel monastero di S.Caterina da Siena a Magnanapoli, fondato nel XVI secolo.
