Piazza della Repubblica fino al XII/XIII secolo formò con Piazza Signorelli un'unica piazza, il Foro etrusco-romano, dove s'intersecavano il Cardo e il Decumano massimo. La costruzione in questo periodo di nuovi edifici diede origine alle due piazze distinte. Il Palazzo del Comune con la sua imponente scalinata di pietra serena fu costruito inizialmente più piccolo, fu poi ampliato e vennero aperte bifore e trifore sul fianco destro del palazzo. La facciata del palazzo includeva due archi sotto i quali passavano la Via Ghibellina e la Via Roma. Visibili nelle foto del primo commento.
