Una macro scattata a fine dicembre durante un'esplorazione notturna, nonostante il freddo alcune specie resistono in attesa della primavera. La locusta egiziana si accoppia in autunno, poi trascorre l'inverno in zone riparate uscendo allo scoperto per nutrirsi solo nelle ore soleggiate. In primavera la femmina depone fino a 100 uova scavando dei cunicoli a qualche centimetro di profondità nel terreno, i piccoli, che si chiamano neanidi, appena nati escono subito allo scoperto e iniziano a nutrirsi della vegetazione. Di notte nei mesi estivi li incontro spesso anche in gruppi sulle piante o tra l'erba. Le neanidi sono molto simili agli adulti, ma si distinguono per le dimensioni ridotte, per la mancanza delle ali e degli organi riproduttivi. In circa due mesi effettuano almeno 5 mute, durante le quali sviluppano queste caratteristiche e si liberano dello strato superficiale della pelle, chiamato esuvia. Un'altra caratteristica interessante è il cambiamento del colore, le neanidi alla schiusa sono tutte verdi ma durante le mute possono cambiare colore con sfumature di giallo o marrone chiaro, per mimetizzarsi meglio nell'ambiente in cui si trovano. Gli esemplari adulti invece sono di colore marrone chiaro, ma qualche volta ho visto anche esemplari con tonalità di verde. Per spiegarvi come ho scattato questa foto voglio scrivere il mio pensiero sulla fotografia macro ad alto ingrandimento. In questi anni ho visto, per fortuna poche volte, persone ignoranti uccidere animali per fotografarli da vicino. Si possono fotografare benissimo senza fargli nessun danno, ma serve esperienza e bisogna sapersi comportare in natura. Per prima cosa cammino senza far rumore e molto lentamente, gli animali possono spuntare all'improvviso e si rischia di calpestarli o farli scappare ancora prima di vederli. Anche il colore dei vestiti può creare fastidio, io porto sempre due cambi, mimetico di giorno e nero di notte. Ho imparato fin da piccolo ad avvistare gli animali da lontano, per scatti così ravvicinati utilizzo sempre i treppiedi, quindi prima avvicinarmi ancora scelgo un buon posto nei paraggi e preparo tutta l'attrezzatura, in questo modo quando posizionerò il soggetto sarà tutto pronto e non rischierò di farlo scappare con i miei movimenti: treppiedi pesante per la macchina fotografica, treppiedi più leggero per il plamp, che è un attrezzo simile ad una pinza e serve per reggere il posatoio, poi posiziono i treppiedi con i flash, ne porto sempre 4, in situazioni normali 2 sono sufficienti, gli altri sono in riserva da usare mentre carico le batterie di quelli scarichi. Faccio pochi scatti alla volta e non li uso mai ad alta potenza per non spaventare o creare danni agli animali. A questi ingrandimenti i flash possono causare riflessi, quindi ho costruito con un cartoncino nero un particolare diffusore per convogliare tutta la luce al centro e l'ho reso impermeabile. Utilizzo sempre la slitta micrometrica e i tubi di prolunga arrivando anche a meno di 1cm dal soggetto. Dopo aver fatto questo posso tentare l'avvicinamento, è essenziale conoscere la specie, meglio avvicinarsi sempre frontalmente, ci sono animali che se avvicinati da dietro lo percepiscono come una minaccia. Con movimenti molto lenti, cerco di invogliarlo a salire su un posatoio oppure prendo quello su cui si trova, questa operazione è molto difficile, impiego di solito dai 5 ai 20 minuti. Se vedo che è spaventato mi fermo ad osservarlo, mi è capitato di stare anche ore, ho notato spesso che dopo un po' si adattano alla nostra presenza e si lasciano anche toccare. Non tutti i tentativi vanno a buon fine, può succedere che mentre mi avvicino l'animale scappa, quindi ho preparato tutta l'attrezzatura per niente e devo posarla di nuovo, ma con la giusta esperienza questo succede molto raramente. Non bisogna mai distrarsi, negli anni ho studiato gli animali e le loro abitudini sul campo ma il comportamento varia per ogni esemplare e niente va mai dato per certo. La locusta egiziana è abbastanza facile da avvicinare ma se spaventata scappa subito saltando o volando con le sue forti ali. Ho incontrato questo esemplare nascosto su un ramo d'ulivo, era fermo a causa del freddo e quando gli ho messo vicino un rametto si è subito aggrappato. Quella notte c'era un vento costante, per fortuna non troppo forte, ho usato un ombrellino diffusore e un telo antipioggia per creare un riparo. Questa specie ha molte caratteristiche particolari, le zampe posteriori sono più lunghe di quelle anteriori e consentono alla locusta di saltare o di prepararsi a volare. Ha due file di spine bianche con punta nera e delle strisce nere sul femore. È stato molto collaborativo e mi ha consentito di fare tutti gli scatti necessari, ho fotografato dettagliatamente anche la testa, poi l'ho rimesso sul ramo d'ulivo dove l'avevo incontrato.
