Il varano delle steppe è una delle tre specie di varano presenti in Mauritania. Ha un'ampia distribuzione nelle regioni subsahariane e si ciba prevalentemente di invertebrati (artropodi e molluschi). Numerosissimi esemplari vengono catturati per il "pet trade" e per il commercio delle pelli. In Italia è vietata la detenzione di tutte le specie di varano.
