Argynnis paphia (Linné, 1758) - Famiglia Nymphalidae - Sottofamiglia Heliconiidae - Apertura alare: Da 5,8 a 6,8 cm. - Distribuzione in Italia: Presente in tutte le regioni, isole comprese. - Habitat: Margini dei boschi e ampie radure, dalla pianura sino a 2000 m. - Periodo di volo: Univoltina da metà maggio a settembre. - Pianta alimentare dei bruchi: Varie specie di viole. - Dimorfismo sessuale: Il maschio presenta, sul diritto delle ali anteriori, la parte centrale delle nervature allargata e fusiforme per la presenza di squame androconiali. La femmina ne è priva, è di dimensioni maggiori, con le ali meno appuntite e con una colorazione con tonalità più tendenti al marrone che all'arancio del maschio. - Variazioni: Alcune popolazioni possono presentare femmine con una colorazione scura di tonalità grigio-verdastra: forma valesina, oltre alla colorazione simile al maschio. - Specie simili: Argynnis pandora che presenta sul rovescio delle ali anteriori una colorazione rossa e non fulva, mentre sul diritto è più scura e velata di verde.
