Roma - Cappella laterale della Basilica di Santa Sabina all'Aventino. - Da vivere Roma, scoprire Roma: Fu fondata nel 425 da Pietro, prete di Illiria, su di un antico Titulus Sabinae, sorto probabilmente nella casa della matrona Sabina, la quale finì poi per identificarsi con la omonima santa. La basilica fu restaurata da papa Leone III e, successivamente, da papa Eugenio II, che la abbellì con la schola cantorum. Per la posizione privilegiata che permetteva il controllo della zona sottostante e una parte del corso del Tevere, nel X secolo, la basilica divenne residenza fortificata di alcune nobili famiglie, i Crescenzi prima e i Savelli dopo. Nel 1219, Papa Onorio III concesse la chiesa e parte del palazzo a S. Domenico di Guzman, fondatore dell'Ordine dei Domenicani, che qui visse e operò; in quella occasione, furono realizzati il campanile e il chiostro. Nel 1587, la basilica fu completamente trasformata da Domenico Fontana per incarico di Sisto V. Nel primo Novecento, fu riportata all'antico aspetto medioevale a opera di Antonio Muñoz, che eliminò le sovrastrutture barocche, tanto che, attualmente, Santa Sabina all'Aventino rappresenta il perfetto esempio di basilica cristiana del V secolo. La facciata, preceduta dall'atrio, è ad arcate, sostenute da quattro antiche colonne di marmo e da quattro di granito, nelle quali sono raccolti frammenti lapidei, sarcofagi di età imperiale e resti di antiche transenne. Il portale mediano della chiesa ha un bel contorno marmoreo di età classica ed è chiuso da preziosi battenti di porta in legno di cipresso, riproducenti in rilievo scene dell'Antico e del Nuovo Testamento. L'interno basilicale, luminoso, vasto e solenne, è diviso in tre navate da ventiquattro colonne scanalate corinzie. Della originaria decorazione del V secolo resta solamente una grande fascia a mosaico con un'iscrizione a belle lettere d'oro su fondo azzurro, che porta i nomi di Pietro di Illiria e del papa del tempo, Celestino I. Alla destra del portale ligneo è situata una colonnina che indica il luogo dove, secondo la tradizione, S. Domenico passava le notti in preghiera; sopra vi è posta una pietra di basalto nero, probabilmente un peso romano. La leggenda vuole che il diavolo, mal tollerando l'intensa pietà con cui S. Domenico pregava sul sepolcro contenente le ossa di alcuni martiri, gli scagliò contro questa pietra, che non colpì il santo ma infranse la lapide che copriva il sepolcro.
