LA CAPPELLA CORNARO DI BERNINI Realizzata tra il 1647 e il 1653, si trova nella chiesa di Santa Maria della Vittoria a Roma. La Cappella Cornaro è da considerarsi l'esempio più alto di uno degli aspetti più nuovi e rivoluzionari dell'arte barocca: la teatralità dell'immagine al fine di suscitare meraviglia e stupore oltre che senso religioso e devozione. L'intera Cappella, meglio nota per la famosa statua della Estasi di Santa Teresa posta nella nicchia centrale, come se fosse una scena teatrale alla quale sette cardinali e clerici della famiglia veneziana, raffigurati sulle pareti laterali, assistono sporti in palchetti, è ad una attenta visione molto più ricca di dettagli e degna di nota. Bernini muove nello spettatore una fruizione totale e coinvolgente facendo presa sulla teatralità e la spettacolarità dell'evento Sopra al gruppo, Bernini apre una finestra con vetri gialli, nascosta dal timpano dell'altare, che come un riflettore sparge dall'alto un fascio di raggi in bronzo dorato. La luce esterna, materializzata da questi raggi, appare momentanea ed effimera rafforzando la sensazione di provvisorietà dell'evento: una trovata di grande effetto, se pensata nella penombra della chiesa. La trasformazione della cappella in palcoscenico teatrale, si conclude – come sopra detto - ai lati dell'altare con due palchetti sui quali sono scolpiti, a mezzobusto, i ritratti di vari personaggi della famiglia Cornaro. L'evento privatissimo della Santa diventa evento pubblico, al quale i nobili della casata Cornaro paiono assistere, non con trepido stupore e vivo trasporto devozionale, ma con staccato disincanto e infatti, sono intenti a scambiarsi commenti. A coronare la composizione, sulla sommità dell'arco, il cartiglio con l'iscrizione latina, "Se non avessi creato il cielo, lo creerei soltanto per te", parole udite da Teresa durante una delle sue esperienze estatiche.
