La Lasiocampa quercus è una falena della famiglia Lasiocampidae, si sviluppa in una sola generazione all'anno e i bruchi trascorrono l'inverno in diapausa. Ho allevato questa specie nell'ultimo anno in un contenitore con un po' di terra e qualche rametto per consentigli di costruire facilmente il bozzolo. Qualche giorno fa è sfarfallata e l'ho fotografata alle ultime luci del tramonto in attesa del suo primo volo notturno, che è avvenuto in tarda serata nonostante il vento e le temperature più basse. Depone le uova facendole cadere nel terreno e i piccoli bruchi nascono dopo circa due settimane. Si nutrono di varie specie di piante, il mio esemplare l'ho trovato a fine settembre dello scorso anno su una pianta di melo nel mio terreno, ma nei mesi invernali l'ho nutrito con l'edera. Il bruco cresce molto lentamente e durante l'inverno con le basse temperature si muove molto poco solo per mangiare. A primavera ritorna in attività, effettua l'ultima muta e parte in esplorazione per preparare il bozzolo. La metamorfosi dura circa 2 o 3 mesi. Una volta nata questa falena ha la spirotromba poco sviluppata, quindi non si nutre e vive solo una settimana. La femmina è attiva prevalentemente di notte, mentre il maschio di giorno. In questo periodo dell'anno il vento è sempre presente, piove spesso ed è molto difficile trovare e fotografare gli animali. Dopo la pioggia però con il terreno umido si fanno ancora bellissimi incontri. In questi giorni ho trovato e sto allevando un bruco di Arctia villica e diversi bruchi di macaone, che il mese scorso a causa del troppo caldo era molto difficile incontrare. Considerando l'arrivo dell'autunno sicuramente questi bruchi trascorreranno l'inverno sotto forma di crisalide.
