Le stelle risplendevano anche quella mattina, piccole lucciole lontane, immerse nell'oscurità. I colori stavano ancora dormendo, tranquilli, cullati dalla lieve brezza estiva. Il silenzio copriva i campi di un manto misterioso, sconosciuto al giorno d'oggi. I fili d'erba, illuminati dal fascio di luce della torcia, abbozzavano un passaggio; i margini indeterminati, si confondevano col verde. L'aurora presto avrebbe iniziato a creare suoni ad oriente, svegliando i colori. Non c'erano pensieri, o preoccupazioni, nell'aria; non c'erano aspettative: tutto questo le avrebbe superate di molto. Era per poter camminare con i caprioli, e dormire con le lepri, il motivo per cui quel bagliore innaturale squarciava i campi. Eppure era un animale anche lui, in fondo. Ma quando alla sera, attraversando i fiori e gli alberi, scorgeva sulla collina le volpi che giocavano assieme, sentiva la lontananza. Era molto più di cento metri, ciò che li divideva. Sognava un vestito morbido, verde, una bandana rossa, per poter volare e vedere da vicino, là, in cima la collina, sotto il grande albero. Forse c'era un modo, molte volte lo aveva pensato, ma poi voltava lo sguardo, perso oltre l'orizzonte. Si scopriva lì, nascosto dietro un cespuglio, dall'altra parte del campo incolto. Quella mattina, invece, sotto gli alberi, guardava l'oscurità, i pensieri persi oltre quel piccolo riparo. Gli faceva impressione sapere di aver camminato laddove anche le volpi lo avevano fatto, inseguendo chissà cosa nella notte, sotto le stelle. Eppure quella mattina lei era lì, davanti a lui, entrambi tra i fiori, sotto le foglie che cominciavano a cadere, tra i colori estivi, illuminati dall'alba scura, dalle nuvole pesanti. C'era ancora distanza tra loro, era vero, ma quella mattina sembrava non esserci. Era un animale anche lui, in fondo. Il tempo si fermò.
