Il fiume “rosso” (Tinto in Spagnolo) nasce da una miniera di rame a cielo aperto dove vivono migliaia di batteri, innocui all'uomo e che anzi si stanno studiando proprio per capire come facciano a vivere qui senza ossigeno, dovuto alla alta acidità di queste acque che non consente nessuna forma di vita. Non a caso qui la Nasa ha messo le sue basi dando vita al cosiddetto “Progetto Marte”, poichè sembrerebbe che questo luogo abbia le stesse caratteristiche del pianeta Marte.
