La recente presenza dell'Ibis in natura è riconducibile a soggetti fuggiti dalla cattività, favorita anche dalla buona capacità di adattamento della specie a climi più rigidi rispetto a quelli dei luoghi di origine. E' una specie eclettica, che frequenta vari tipi di ambienti, tutti legati all'acqua, si nutre principalmente di invertebrati e può integrare la sua dieta con anfibi, rettili, piccoli pesci e animali morti; specie con una marcata indole sociale, la si può osservare sia in gruppo sia con individui isolati, ma sempre aggregata ad aironi cenerini, garzette e aironi guardabuoi. Nidifica in colonie miste e il nido, posto tra le fronde degli alberi è costituito da rami intrecciati; la deposizione, 3-4 uova, avviene tra marzo e settembre con uova di colore bianco-azzurro. L'adulto è estremamente facile da riconoscere: collo lungo e sinuoso di colore nero, becco anche esso nero ricurvo verso il basso lungo e possente; le zampe sono nere come le piume che vanno dal dorso alle estremità alari; tutto il corpo è ricoperto da un piumaggio bianco, comprese le ali che hanno però marginature nere sui bordi.
