Il paese di Exilles (To) all'imbocco della Val di Susa ha origine antichissima , esistendo già come nucleo in epoca preromana . Dal 1155 si ha testimonianza del celebre forte , sotto il comando dei conti D'albon e situato in posizione strategica sulla Via Francigena . Da quella data il forte e il paese passarono or sotto i Savoia or sotto il delfinato francese sino a che , nel 1593 , il forte e il paese passarono sotto il controllo di Carlo Emanuele I di Savoia . Tornato sotto il dominio francese , la leggenda vuole che il forte , dal 1681 al 1687 , fosse luogo di detenzione della celebre "Maschera di Ferro" . Storia nella storia , il vicolo ritratto è intitolato a Colombano Romean , il mitico minatore-scalpellino che , nel 1526 , ricevette l'incarico di scavare nella viva roccia un tunnel per portare l'acqua dal rio Touilles dal versante nord della cresta dei Denti di Chiomonte , al versante sud e consentire così l'irrigazioine dei terreni sottostanti di Cels e Ramats. Il tunnel , lungo poco meno di cinquecento metri , largo uno e alto circa due , fu scavato dal Romean in sette anni col solo ausilio del suo scalpello (opera titanica per l'epoca !) dietro compenso di 5 fiorini e 12 soldi per ogni "tesa" (misura dell'epoca che corrispondeva a circa 1,7 metri , più vitto e attrezzatura occorrente . Purtroppo , il povero Romean non godette i frutti del suo durissimo lavoro : giusto al termine dell'opera , morì ; le malelingue sostennero che fosse stato avvelenato dai committenti dell'opera per evitare l'esborso della considerevole cifra di 1600 fiorini ma più probabilmente il poveretto morì per la fatica durissima , le condizioni in cui aveva lavorato e ... l'eccesiva passione per il vino ! Il "pertus" (buco , in piemontese) di Romean esiste tuttora e compie ancor oggi la sua missione irrigua ed è visitabile e percorribile senza grosse difficoltà nei mesi di minore portata idrica cioè tra agosto e novembre . Per raggiungerlo , occorre arrivare alla frazione Grange dell Valle , sopra Exilles e da lì raggiungere i Tre Denti di Chiomonte , un percorso piuttosto lungo anche se non troppo erto ma sicuramente panoramico e di grande bellezza.
