Il Museo dei Bozzetti “Pierluigi Gherardi” nasce nel 1984 a Pietrasanta, a seguito di iniziative promosse da Jette Muhlendorph, con l'intento di documentare l'attività artistica degli scultori che qui si recano da tutto il mondo per realizzare le proprie opere nei laboratori artigiani locali. E' un'istituzione unica nel suo genere ed è il riflesso diretto dell'attività che maggiormente caratterizza il comprensorio apuo-versiliese ed in particolare Pietrasanta: la scultura. Una tradizione di secoli lega infatti la città alla lavorazione artistica del marmo: attività di maestri pietrasantesi è attestata in diversi centri toscani fin dal XIV secolo, oltre ad essere testimoniata dalle opere presenti nelle chiese cittadine; è a Pietrasanta che nel Cinquecento Michelangelo venne a firmare contratti per i marmi da lui fatti cavare sulle vicine Alpi Apuane.
