Eravamo scappati dalla costa ovest della South island in Nuova Zelanda, flagellata da piogge intensissime a causa della 'solita' perturbazione proveniente dal mar di Tasmania, percorrendo alcune centinaia di km su strade parzialmente allagate. La costa ovest è -probabilmente- il posto più piovoso della terra (insieme alla parte meridionale del Cile). Avevo fermato un camion addetto alla manutenzione stradale per domandare se quelle piogge fossero normali e la risposta del conducente era stata uno 'Yeah' strascicato e noncurante che lasciva intendere: 'guarda questi turisti che si allarmano per quattro gocce d'acqua'. Sempre inseguiti dalla tempesta, dopo aver fiancheggiato la parte nord del lake Wanaka, riuscimmo a valicare il 'neck' che lo separa dal lake Hawea e finalmente entrammo nel sottovento della tempesta protetti dalla catena della Alpi Neozelandesi. Non diluviava più ma c'era un vento di caduta fortissimo (fohn), tipico della parte orientale di tutta l'isola meridionale. La tempesta, quella che si vede nell'immagine, era finalmente alle nostre spalle. Per la cronaca: anche se, secondo l'addetto stradale, si trattava di 'quattro gocce' la zona venne colpita da inondazioni e molte strade vennero chiuse per alcuni giorni.
