Nel 1220, un frate domenicano, Uguccione Sardo fondò a Pisa uno stabilimento ospedaliere con annessa una chiesa. La ricostruzione in toto dell'intero complesso parte dal 1251 allo scopo di ingrandire sia la chiesa che il convento. I lavori vengono ultimati nel 1326, e oltre alla facciata della chiesa, viene costruita e ultimata anche la cappella di una delle più potenti famiglie di Pisa, gli Orlandi. Nel 1651, un furioso incendio distrugge in grande parte la chiesa e si procede con i restauri che portano anche alla costruzione degli altari laterali. Nel 1748, dopo altri importanti ristrutturazioni, Pietro Leopoldo, Granduca di Toscana, sopprime gli ordini religiosi, chiude il convento ed elegge l'annessa chiesa a parrocchia. A partire dal 1923 e fino al secondo dopoguerra, la chiesa è interessatada una serie di restauri che hanno lo scopo di riportarla ad uno stile che somigliasse al gotico originario. Viene restaurato anche il campanile e riparati ulteriori danni prodotti dal secondo conflitto mondiale. La facciata della chiesa è costruita nel primo ventennio del XIV secolo al tempo del Priore Giacomo Donati. Il rivestimento marmoreo, risale al 1326, anno della morte del priore, grazie a un lascito testamentario. La facciata venne modificata tra il 1921 e il 1927. La fascia inferiore, tendente al romanico, è decorata da tre arcate cieche a tutto sesto sorrette da esili colonnine con capitelli scolpiti. All'interno dell'arcata centrale è racchiuso il portale, leggermente strombato, con lunetta musiva raffigurante la Madonna col Bambino. La parte superiore della facciata è costituita da un doppio loggiato gotico di ispirazione romanico-pisana. Il loggiato inferiore presenta nove archetti poggianti su colonnine; quello superiore, invece, presenta ai lati due serie di quattro archetti ciascuna e al centro il rosone, con raggiera novecentesca, inserito all'interno di una cornice con 22 busti di santi. La facciata è coronata da una semplice croce in ferro battuto. La chiesa è dedicata a Santa Caterina d'Alessandria d'Egitto, vergine e martire cristiana, venerata tanto nella Chiesa cattolica quanto in quella ortodossa, e anche nelle altre Chiese Cristiane che permettono la venerazione dei Santi. La sua storia risale all'antichità, e non è priva d'incertezze a causa della confusione tra leggenda e realtà storica. Ciò che si attesta per certo è la sua nascita, fatta risalire al 287 circa, e la sua morte avvenuta intorno al 305 ad Alessandria d'Egitto, dove fu sottoposta a martirio.
