La cappella indipendente di S. Maria Maddalena, a pochi passi dal complesso principale, fu costruita nel XV sec. Ospita la tomba del Beato Barnaba Massei di Terni (m. 1477), a cui alcuni attribuiscono l'ideazione del primo moderno monte dei pegni, nel 1462, come mezzo per i poveri per sfuggire alle grinfie degli usurai, nominandolo Mons Pietatis , letteralmente "Monte della Pietà". Questa strana nomenclatura deriva in realtà da un termine commerciale medievale, mons , una somma o un mucchio di denaro, con "pietà" aggiunta per indicare che non era solo un altro usuraio commerciale. Per quanto riguarda quegli oggetti simili a pan di zucchero su cui si trova la croce, la loro somiglianza con i globi del banco dei pegni è casuale. Questi ultimi derivano dai bisanti dello stemma mediceo — un gruppo di persone molto meno simpatico, e difficilmente dedito a opere di beneficenza — mentre quella che vedete qui è una rappresentazione comune, che si trova solitamente negli stemmi o che li sorreggono, di montagne. Talvolta in connessione con Crocifissione e Calvario, come in questo esempio dalla chiesa di S. Maria del Suffragio in Empoli; ma il più delle volte rappresenta solo un borgo o un castello arroccato, come nella chiesa di S. Cecilia ad Acquasparta ; qui, il Monte della Pietà, sul Monte Subasio.
