La cappella indipendente di S. Maria Maddalena, a pochi passi dal complesso principale, fu costruita nel XV sec. Ospita la tomba del Beato Barnaba Massei di Terni (m. 1477), a cui alcuni attribuiscono l'ideazione del primo moderno monte dei pegni, nel 1462, come mezzo per i poveri per sfuggire alle grinfie degli usurai, nominandolo Mons Pietatis , letteralmente "Monte della Pietà". Questa strana nomenclatura deriva in realtà da un termine commerciale medievale, mons , una somma o un mucchio di denaro, con "pietà" aggiunta per indicare che non era solo un altro usuraio commerciale.
