La torretta della Rocchetta era una torre di avvistamento che faceva parte di un gruppo di cinque edifici, oggi ormai scomparsi, fatta eccezione per qualche traccia lasciata da quella di Sant'Irene. Il complesso difensivo, realizzato secondo alcune fonti nel X secolo, per altre nel 1270, aveva lo scopo di prevenire le incursioni saracene che all'epoca terrorizzavano i calabresi. L'edificio ha una struttura pentagonale molto singolare: solitamente, infatti, i bastioni di avvistamento hanno forme circolari o quadrate. Inoltre, un'altra particolarità data dalla Rocchetta, sta nell'ubicazione: non si trova, infatti, sopra una collina, come di consueto, ma sul mare, posizione molto insolita per una struttura di questa natura. Per questo motivo, un notaio napoletano, Pietro Gallerano, che visitò il luogo nel XVII secolo, la definì «una fortezza nell'acqua che aveva ponti levatoi».
