La cupola di Brunelleschi: il primo progetto del padre del rinascimento. Incredibile ma vero, Brunelleschi prima della cupola non aveva costruito nulla, si annoveravano sculture, decorazioni in bronzo, orologi e disegni, ma nessun edificio. Nonostante questo, i suoi contemporanei decisero di affidare a Filippo il cantiere, affiancandogli il celebre e stimato orafo Lorenzo Ghiberti. Brunelleschi non sopportò mai questo affronto alle sue capacità progettuali, sebbene comprensibili da parte dei committenti che si accingevano a mettere nelle mani di un novellino la più complessa impresa architettonica mai conosciuta fino ad allora. Per dimostrare le sue competenze e sminuire Ghiberti, Brunelleschi durante i lavori si finse malato e si assentò dal cantiere per 10 giorni. In sua assenza l'orafo non fu in grado di portare avanti il cantiere nemmeno di un mattone, e fu subito mandato via lasciando campo libero al trionfante Filippo.
