La Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, progettata e realizzata da Gian Lorenzo Bernini, è un meraviglioso esempio di arte barocca. Papa Innocenzo X nel 1647, decise di ristrutturare l'intera piazza, commissionando la realizzazione della Fontana dei Fiumi ad ornamento della piazza, un tempo occupata dallo stadio di Domiziano. In quegli anni, sempre per volere del pontefice, si realizzò il palazzo di famiglia, insieme alla chiesa di Sant'Agnese in Agone e al Collegio Innocenziano. Il Bernini, per ottenere la commissione papale del progetto della Fontana, fece una mossa molto astuta: regalò un modello in argento dell'opera alla cognata del papa, Olimpia Maidalchini. Innocenzo X, vedendo il modellino, gli affidò il lavoro, spiazzando la concorrenza del Borromini. La Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi esprime movimento in ogni particolare. È immaginata come una grande scogliera di travertino, scavata da una grotta con quattro aperture, che sorreggono l'obelisco di granito. Agli angoli della scogliera sono collocate le monumentali statue marmoree dei quattro fiumi, che rappresentano i continenti allora conosciuti. Il Danubio, realizzato da Antonio Ercole Raggi, rappresenta l'Europa, ed è stato immortalato mentre indica lo stemma della famiglia Pamphilij. Il Nilo, realizzato da Giacomo Antonio Fancelli, rappresenta l'Africa, con il capo velato, per indicare le sue sorgenti ancora sconosciute ai tempi. Il Rio de la Plata, realizzato da Francesco Baratta, rappresenta l'America, raffigurato con un braccio alzato e con un sacco pieno di monete preziose, che ricordano il colore delle sue acque. Infine, il Gange (che vedete nella foto), realizzato da Claude Poussin, rappresenta l'Asia, e nella sua mano regge un lungo remo, per ricordare la sua facile navigabilità. (da Eventi.it)
