Matera è un comune italiano di 60 286 abitanti , capoluogo dell'omonima provincia e più grande comune per superficie della Basilicata . È conosciuta in tutto il mondo per gli storici rioni Sassi , che ne fanno una delle città ancora abitate più antiche al mondo . I Sassi sono stati riconosciuti nel 1993 patrimonio dell'umanità dall'UNESCO , primo sito dell'Italia meridionale a ricevere tale riconoscimento . Nel 2014 è stata designata capitale europea della cultura nel 2019 . Matera è nota anche come città dei Sassi , proprio per la peculiarità e l'unicità del suo centro storico . Scavati e costruiti a ridosso della Gravina di Matera , una profonda gola che divide il territorio in due , i Sassi di Matera , rioni che costituiscono la parte antica della città , si distendono in due vallette , che guardano ad est , leggermente sottoposte rispetto ai territori circostanti , separate tra loro dallo sperone roccioso della Civita . I Sassi di Matera sono un insediamento urbano derivante dalle varie forme di civilizzazione ed antropizzazione succedutesi nel tempo a partire da quelle preistoriche dei villaggi trincerati del periodo neolitico , all'habitat della civiltà rupestre ( IX-XI secolo ) , che costituisce il sostrato urbanistico dei Sassi . liberamente tratto da Wikipedia .
