E' la quarta bellezza naturale della terra secondo il National Geographic, e pur essendo situata nel torrido deserto di Lut, a sud-est dell'Iran, attrae turisti da tutto il mondo, anche nel mese di agosto. I Kaloot (equivalente persiano del termine turco e più diffuso Yardang), sono collinette strette e vicine nel deserto, molte volte simili a dei minareti, che creano delle strutture a U; il merito è del vento impetuoso del deserto persiano che porta via strati di terreno argillosi, detriti del fondale del Tetide, l'antico oceano che nel periodo geologico del Miocene si estendeva sul territorio dell'attuale Iran. La città di Kerman, capoluogo dell'omonima regione del sud-est dell'Iran, non lontana dal turbolento confine con il Pakistan (a rischio narcos ed estremisti sunniti), è la base per le escursioni nel deserto, dove sorgono i Kaloot. la città di Zahedan poi è quella situata più vicino al confine pakistano -
