Il pungiglione o coda che vuol chiamarsi è del tutto inoffensivo, a cosa serve? Serve precisamente per difendersi, ma non da altri animali o insetti predatori, bensì dalla femmina della sua specie in fase di accoppiamento, perché ha la tendenza a mangiarsi il partner una volta compiuto il suo lavoro. Al fuco (maschio dell'ape) tale sorte è inevitabile, mentre per la mosca scorpione le cose vanno meglio, in quanto, con il suo pungiglione blocca la femmina rendendola quasi inoffensiva, e per stare ancora più tranquillo, quando trova il partner per accoppiarsi, le porta in dono qualche insetto per farla mangiare sperando così di salvarsi, cosa che accade, ma non sempre.
