"Nel maggio del 1519 la chiesa, che allora era orientata nel verso opposto, con la facciata rivolta verso piazza Santi Apostoli, fu distrutta da un incendio. Rimase intatto solo il crocifisso che ornava l'altare maggiore. Questa circostanza portò a ritenere miracoloso l'accaduto. Raimondo Vich organizzò una processione penitenziale che si protrasse per 18 giorni, con il santissimo crocifisso portato a spalla per tutti i rioni di Roma, fino alla Basilica di San Pietro. Partecipò tutto il popolo, di tutte le età e le condizioni, oltre ai nobili e ai religiosi, che scalzi e con il capo cosparso di cenere invocavano misericordia. E dove passava, la peste spariva. Un anno fa, papa Francesco pregava in una piazza San Pietro deserta, sotto lo sguardo attonito di tutta la cristianità, davanti al crocifisso miracoloso."
