Il Dallol, è quanto risulta dall'esplosione di una camera magmatica lungo la Rift Valley, precisamente nell'Etiopia nord-orientale, nella depressione dancalica (-160mt slm), dove si trova un enorme deposito di sale, risalente a quando il Mar Rosso si estendeva fino a queste lande. Attualmente si presenta come una bassa collina ricca di concrezioni dovute alla risalita di vapori e gas (tossici), ricchi di minerali di zolfo e magnesio, ossidi di ferro e soda, che conferiscono al Dallol una varietà di colori che vanno dal bianco a giallo, dal rosso al verde, rendendolo così estremamente spettacolare.
