In un bel palazzo del '600, affacciato su uno dei più suggestivi canali della città, si cela un vero tesoro nascosto! L'edificio, distribuito su più livelli, passerebbe quasi inosservato lungo Oudezijds Voorbugwall se non fosse per una fotografia affissa sulle scalette d'ingresso che mostra la bellissima chiesa dedicata a Sinter Klaas (abbreviazione di Sanctus Nicolaus) ricavata nell'ampia soffitta! Jan Hartman, ricco mercante cattolico nel 1661 acquistò un edificio più due contigui sul retro e, oltre, a ricavarne l'abitazione per la propria famiglia, decise di costruire la chiesa. Con la Riforma protestante del 1578, infatti ai cattolici non fu più permesso di professare pubblicamente la propria fede. Migliaia di persone per due secoli si sono inerpicate sulla soffitta per partecipare alle funzioni religiose e ancora oggi, nonostante sia un museo dal 1888 - Almestring Museum - nella ex chiesa clandestina si possono celebrare matrimoni, funzioni religiose e concerti. Dopo il Rijksmuseum, è il museo più antico di Amsterdam. Ma soprattutto è un luogo che emoziona.
