La Masseria è una fattoria fortificata che si è molto diffusa in Puglia per lo più nel periodo medievale ed in genere è legata alle grandi proprietà terriere (le “massae”, gestite da massari, da cui il termine masseria). Si tratta quindi di costruzioni rurali che possono essere di notevoli dimensioni, dove erano alloggiati di stanza i contadini, il gestore (massaro) e alle volte gli stessi proprietari terrieri (questi ultimi ai piani alti). I molti ambienti servivano da stalle e come depositi dei raccolti e delle derrate, oltre che per lavorare i prodotti della pastorizia (in questi poderi si produceva quasi tutto quanto era necessario per il sostentamento). Non di rado queste masserie hanno una cappella all'interno della recinzione o nel perimetro del podere di riferimento e un pozzo da cui attingere acqua per ogni necessità. Le Masserie del Salento sono molto differenti tra loro come costruzioni e dimensioni: si passa da piccole strutture a veri “fortini”. Non mancano le strutture che sono più vicine ai manieri, ville vere e proprie che erano utilizzati come luoghi di villeggiatura dai ricchi proprietari. Comunque spesso si tratta di piccoli gioielli di architetture arricchite da portali, balconi, decorazioni, affreschi e notevoli giardini. Le masserie fortificate vere è propri sono architetture utili alla difesa dai briganti, dai pirati e dalle le varie minacce che venivano dal mare (non ultimo il pericolo dei turchi che per secoli è stato il terrore di queste terre). Le Masserie fortificate come strutture si diffondono nel Salento negli anni che vanno dal 1440 al 1800. Spesso sono fornite di torri di avvistamento e sono dotate di strumenti architettonici difensivi (merlature, feritoie e caditoie per olio bollente), arroccamenti con spesse mura perimetrali, varie strutture di rinforzo anche operate su costruzioni preesistenti. Oggi nel Salento, e la terra del gallipolino ne è esempio, è possibile visitare molte di queste costruzioni, talvolta abbastanza estese e in alcuni casi restaurate ed utilizzate come aziende agrituristiche o bed & breakfast.
