I serpenti velenosi si dividono in tre categorie in base alla posizione e alla conformazione dei denti veleniferi. Proteroglifi presentano denti veleniferi fissi e di piccole dimensioni posti nella parte anteriori della bocca, opistoglifi invece hanno denti veleniferi nella parte posteriore della bocca fissi e di dimensioni ridotte, infine vi sono i solenoglifi i quali presentano zanne mobili poste nella parte anteriore della bocca. Le vipere considerate appartengono a quest'ultima categoria, i denti quando la bocca è chiusa sono riposti in un'apposita guaina e ripiegati verso il palato, durante la fase di attacco i denti si proiettano in avanti come si può osservare dalla foto.
