I piloni di cui è disseminato il territorio piemontese, sono spesso dei veri e propri ex voto, ovvero eretti da un singolo o da una famiglia in ringraziamento di una grazia ottenuta, ecco perché sono "votivi". Frequentemente i piloni si erigevano, anche qui come presidio sacro, in quei borghi ove non c'era spazio (o disponibilità economica) per costruire una cappella. Detto questo il pilone votivo rappresenta un presidio importante di devozione popolare, in quanto rappresentano un monito rivolto al viandante, quando sorgono lungo le vie campestri o al borghigiano, quando si trovano in un villaggio o nei suoi dintorni. Il monito, ovviamente, è un invito a mantenere salda la devozione soprattutto nei confronti di alcune figure religiose care al mondo contadino; oltre Cristo e la Vergine, infatti, i Santi raffigurati sui piloni sono figure che trovano particolare venerazione presso chi svolge professioni legate a questo ambito o chi ne fa direttamente parte e ne popola i borghi. Posti lungo le vie di comunicazione, i piloni rappresentano un voto affinché chi transita lungo le pedaggere di campagna o i sentieri di montagna abbia protezione: sia tutelato contro i pericoli rappresentati dal viaggio stesso e abbia protezione dai malviventi che un tempo, dal medio-evo fino al XIX secolo, trovavano nascondiglio nelle selve della pianura piemontese. Posti nei borghi, invece, rappresentavano un punto di riferimento, un luogo di raccolta, un invito alla preghiera ed al raccoglimento. Anche qui, ovviamente vi erano raffigurati personaggi cui la devozione popolare si affidava per ottenere protezione contro le calamità:
