Ha due, tre generazioni annuali, con sfarfallamento dalla primavera all'estate. Il bruco maturo è inconfondibile: verde con anelli neri punteggiati di giallo-arancio/rosso-arancio. Si ciba di varie specie di Apiacee (Ombrellifere), come il finocchio e la carota. Se si sente in pericolo, il bruco del macaone estroflette da dietro la testa un paio di cornetti: si tratta di ghiandole (osmeterium), che emettono un odore repellente con lo scopo di allontanare i possibili predatori.
