Foglie Morte Oh! che già il vento volta e porta via le piogge! Dentro la quercia folta ruma le foglie roggie che si staccano, e fru . . . partono; un branco ad ogni soffio che l'avviluppi. Par che la quercia sogni ora, gemendo, i gruppi del novembre che fu. Volano come uccelli, morte nel bel sereno: picchiano nei ramelli del roseo pesco, pieno de' suoi cuccoli già. E il roseo pesco oscilla pieno di morte foglie: quale s'appende e prilla, quale da lui si toglie con un sibilo, e va. Ma quelle foglie morte che il vento, come roccia, spazza, non già di morte parlano ai fiori in boccia, ma sussurrano: – Orsù! Dentro ogni cocco all'uscio vedo dei gialli ugnoli: tu che costì nel guscio di più covar ti duoli, che ti pèriti più? Fuori le aluccie pure, tu che costì sei vivo! Il vento ruglia . . . eppure esso non è cattivo. Ruglia, brontola: ma… contende a noi! Chè tutto vuol che sia mondo l'orto pei nuovi fiori, e il brutto, il secco, il vecchio, il morto, vuol che netti di qua. Noi c'indugiammo dove nascemmo, un po', ma era per ricoprir le nuove gemme di primavera… Così dicono, e fru… Pascoli
