L'antica chiesa del Sacro Monte, costruita a fine Quattrocento, dedicata alla Madonna Assunta, era situata dove oggi sorge l'Albergo “Casa del Pellegrino” e con il tempo e l'accresciuta fama del Sacro Monte risultò insufficiente. Nel 1614 si iniziò la nuova chiesa con le donazioni di Agostino Beccaria, un nobiluomo di Pavia, e le elemosine dei pellegrini. Dapprima si edificò il coro, ultimato nel 1642, dove, con una cerimonia solenne, venne trasportata dalla chiesa vecchia la statua lignea della Madonna dormiente, una delle più antiche del Sacro Monte, già documentata nel 1498, attribuita a Gaudenzio Ferrari, oggi conservata nello scurolo.
