Il santuario è inserito all'interno di una caverna nella quale sgorga una sorgente d'acqua. L'origine del luogo risale nel periodo delle lotte tra Guelfi e Ghibellini iniziate nella seconda metà del XIV secolo e gli abitanti per sfuggire alla guerra trovarono rifugio in una “grotta busa” (in dialetto “buca”) una grande cavità naturale formata dalle pareti montuose. Alcuni portarono la statua lignea della Madonna Addolorata alla quale volsero le loro preghiere e si salvarono e la grotta divenne luogo di culto riconosciuto e autorizzato per le celebrazioni eucaristiche. La chiesa è stata anche luogo di preghiera e di rito spirituale di don Angelo Roncalli prima che diventasse pontefice, Giovanni XXIII. #interni
