La chiesa fu costruita a partire dal 1351 dagli Agostiniani Conventuali. Sotto l'episcopato di Bonifacio Bottigella (1393-1404) - lettore all'università di Pavia e priore del monastero agostiniano di S. Pietro in Ciel d'Oro in Pavia - la chiesa fu decorata con affreschi, di cui poco rimane, e fu completata con la bellissima facciata che tuttora si ammira. A metà del '500 gli Eremitani di S. Agostino subentrarono ai Conventiali, poi, in epoca napoleonica, il monastero fu soppresso e la chiesa divenne pertinenza della vicina parrocchia di S. Lorenzo. L'armoniosa facciata, di inizio '400, costruita e ornata in cotto, è divisa in tre specchiature da due lesene che salgono fin poco oltre la metà dell'altezza. Il profilo superiore, bordato da una galleria di archetti e culminante in cinque pinnacoli, è spezzato, con il campo centrale leggermente sopraelevato: lo schema della facciata annuncia così la suddivisione interna in tre navate a sala gradonata. Nella superficie muraria si aprono un oculo sopra il portale e due finestre ogivali nelle specchiature laterali.
