La Fontana delle Tartarughe Nel 1570, a Roma, terminano i lavori di restauro dell'acquedotto dell'Acqua Virgo ed iniziano quelli per una ramificazione secondaria del condotto che ha portato alla realizzazione di diverse nuove fontane, tra cui quella delle Tartarughe, costruita tra il 1581 e il 1588 sul progetto di Giacomo Della Porta. La fontana è formata da una vasca quadrata con spigolo arrotondati, con al centro un basamento con quattro conchiglie che sorregge una sorta di anafora che a sua volta sorregge un bacino rotondo in marmo, con le teste di putti sotto l'orlo dalle cui bocche aperte esce l'acqua in eccesso. I quattro efebi in bronzo che giocano con i quattro delfini appoggiati sulle vasche a forma di conchiglia evidenziano la raffinatezza manieristica dell'opera, che si distingue dallo schema adottato nelle fontane romane della fine del Cinquecento. Come gli efebi anche le tartarughe, collocate sul bordo della vasca superiore e attribuite dalla tradizione al Bernini, sono stati aggiunti dopo il restauro del 1658. LA CURIOSITA' Una curiosa leggenda è legata al Duca Mattei, proprietario del palazzo omonimo: essendo un giocatore incallito e avendo perso una cospicua somma di denaro gli venne rifiutata la mano della figlia di un signore della zona che lo considerava uno squattrinato. Ma il Duca, per vendicarsi, organizzò nel suo palazzo una sontuosa festa invitando anche il ricco signore e la figlia: dopo tutta la notte di grandi festeggiamenti, all'alba li invitò ad affacciarsi sulla piazza mostrandogli la fontana che la sera prima non c'era per fargli capire cosa avrebbe perso non acconsentendo al matrimonio, perché era stato comunque capace di far costruire una bellissima opera in una sola notte. Il matrimonoio cosi avvenne ma il Duca fece murare la finestra affinché nessuno potesse più ammirare la fontana dal palazzo.
